My niece, Christa Suddarth, graduated with a degree in film studies and is a fan of classic movies. She requested I make a quilt for her featuring Alfred Hitchcock as the Director.
Preparing the Quilt Top
I searched for pictures of Alfred Hitchcock. I found one of a poster, edited it and then posterized with a psychedelic filter.
Then I took the image and sent it to a custom fabric making site.
Quilting the Top
The entire quilt was done by the longarm, except for the label. I made the label with my embroidery machine.
About half of the quilt was done by free motion, i.e. hand-guided. The other half was done with the help of Pro-Stitcher Premium. However, many of the computer designs were custom made.
I found graphics online to represent various movies that Alfred directed. I digitized them in Floriani Total Control, and converted them to quilting designs in Art and Stitch. The designs I did this way are:
- Vortex for “Vertigo”
- Bi-Plan for “North by Northwest”
- Pistol
- Retro TV and retro movie camera
- The old house for “Psycho”
- The noose for “The Rope”
- The retro phone for “Dial M for Murder”
The bird for “The Birds” was an embroidery file that I converted to a quilt file in Art and Stitch.
For the knife, like was used in “Psycho”, I took a kitchen knife and laid it on the quilt, traced around it, and then quilted it.
I printed the men on fabric using an inkjet, cut them out and then stitched them as a raw edge applique.
Within the clapper, there is a section that has movie strips, megaphones and other iconic images. I modified the file in Art and Stitch so that I could add “Director” to some of the megaphones.
The back of the quilt is a custom printed fleece blanket of a scene from Psycho.
For finishing, I had some custom fabric made with Christa’s name on it and then I used that for the binding.
For the label, I found a coloring book image, imported it, digitized it, added words, then turned it into a patch with my Solaris (I love this machine!)
Thank you!
Paulette
